What has changed for the 2024 Summer?

  • We no longer provide Cable TV on campus. This is a year round change for UMD Housing. Check with your home cable provider to see if there is an "on the go" option.
  • Housing & Residence Life staff will not be hosting ongoing events and activities, and as a result Northern Exposure Points have been discontinued. Staff will host an orientation, a social at the beginning of the program, and will be available to answer questions and help with technology/Wi-Fi setup.
  • Folks who wish to use the Rec Center Facilities will need to purchase a membership when they arrive, similar to how folks pay for meals in the dining center. Information regarding summer membership rates can be found here. Summer Seniors who purchase the pass will have access to any summer classes offered by Rec Center staff, but should not expect having senior only classes.

What is there to do in Duluth?

What is there to do at the Summer Senior Program?

Summer Seniors get together to do their favorite activities like golfing, hiking, pickle ball, or card games. Participate in group activities as much or as little as you prefer.

Night Manager Staff

College students are employed to live in the same communities as seniors, coordinate program activities, to work at the Housing Information Desk, and in custodial and maintenance positions. All student employees are supervised by full-time, professional staff.

Summer Resident Handbook

Summer Senior residents are expected to follow all UMD Policies and Procedures for living on campus, located in our UMD Housing & Residence Life Guidebook. For specific information about summer policies, please see the Summer Addendum on page 39 of the Housing Guidebook.

Around Campus

Summer Senior residents may use the campus recreational facilities and library. Participants wishing to use the the recreational center will have to opt in for this service as it will not be automatically provided as in years past. The campus is also home to walking trails, dining services, a city bus hub, an art museum and even a historic estate.

Around Town

Voted Outside Magazine’s 2014 “Best Town Ever”, Duluth overlooks Lake Superior and minutes away from world-class recreational and cultural activities. UMD is a great “base camp” to explore all the area has to offer.

Area Weather

Average high temperatures are 66°F in June and 75°F in July. The wide expanse of Lake Superior causes the “lake effect” with cooler summer temperatures and warmer winter temperatures than the surrounding area. It’s truly “cooler by the lake”.
