New Student Application

Academic Year 2024-2025

Housing Applications for the 2024-2025 Academic Year will be available in the Housing Portal on February 1 at 12 PM.  

Students will complete their housing application via the Housing Portal (link below). As part of the application, students will be able to request roommates and their preferences for housing. Students are required to submit a $200 installment payment and e-sign the housing contract for their housing application to be considered complete.

If you see a "System Temporarily Unavailable" message when trying to access the Housing Portal, our system is currently at capacity. Please try accessing the system later.

Access the Housing Portal to complete your housing application

In order to access the Housing Portal, you need to:

  1. Initiate your UMD Internet ID Account. If you have registered for Orientation this step is already completed. Only students who have been admitted to UMD will have access to the housing application.
  2. Activate your UMD Email Account. You'll receive housing confirmation emails and emails from potential roommates at your UMD account, so it is important that you activate your UMD email account.  


Initiate your UMD Internet ID Account.

You need to initiate your unique Internet ID account to get access to U of M network resources.

  • Locate your Student ID - found in your Admission letter
  • Create a password. Please view the tips on how to create a good password. Keep your password handy, but safe (do not share your password with anyone else).
  • Write down your Internet ID. Example: champ021


Activate your UMD Email Account.

  • Login to the MyU Portal with your Internet ID and password you created
  • Click the Email link
  • Check the 3 boxes to accept the terms and conditions for using Google Apps at the University
  • Select the Duluth campus
  • Submit form. Keep in mind, it may take up to 30 minutes for your email to be available to use.
  • Write down your email address [your internet id]@d.umn.edu. Example: [email protected]

Housing Installment Payment

The $200 Installment Payment is required as part of the housing application. If you cancel your housing application, you may be eligible for a partial refund based upon the following schedule.

For full academic year (fall semester start) applications:

  • If cancellation is emailed to UMD Housing on or before June 1, 2024: $150 of installment payment refunded
  • If cancellation is emailed to UMD Housing between June 2 and June 17, 2024: $75 of installment payment refunded
  • If cancellation is emailed to UMD Housing after June 18, 2024: $0 of installment payment refunded

Building Preference Requests

Building preferences will still be collected as part of the housing application process in case students need to be assigned a space by Housing & Residence Life. Please note, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to honor all building preference requests.


Housing Accommodations

Please indicate any medical needs that may require an accommodation in the appropriate section on your housing application. Please note, however, that you must also complete the Housing Accommodations process through Disability Resources to formally request an accommodation.  


Room Assignment Process

  • Students will select their room assignment sometime after the July 4th holiday and will be emailed instructions to their UMD email on how to complete the process.
  • Students will be assigned a date & time to select their room assignment based on the date they applied for admission to UMD.
  • All rooms will be on a first come first served basis.

***Please note: Students who do not select a room will automatically be assigned a space by Housing & Residence Life. 

Roommates

  • Students will have the opportunity to select their own roommate by entering into a roommate group. 
  • The student who applied the earliest for admission to UMD should be the group leader.
  • The “group leader” will select the room for members of the roommate group.
  • Roommate groups need to be finalized by June 28.
  • Students have the opportunity to edit their application, including roommate groups, until June 28.

***Please note: Students are not required to have a roommate to select their room. 

Learning Communities

  • Students in a learning community will not participate in the room selection process but rather will be assigned by Housing & Residence Life in the Learning Community.
